Matera is the sister-city to Gravina in Puglia. The city lies along a small ravine (la Gravina), which has been eroded by the Gravina River (really just a small stream). The oldest part of the city is made up of sassi, which are cavernous stone homes cut into the walls of the ravine. The "Sassi di Matera" area is typified by steep and winding stone stairs that connect the sassi homes. The Sassi di Matera is a UNESCO heritage site.
