selenium toned silver gelatin print
This image was created in the courtyard entrance of an occupied apartment building. There is a shotgun leaning against the interior wall of the guard booth. While southern Italy remains less dangerous than the north, Naples has a notorious reputation for crime.
Organized crime, in the form of the Mafia
, exerts control over southern Italian families and businesses. Business owners are expected to pay protection money (called pizzo
) to their regional crime syndicates. Those that refuse to pay risk losing their businesses or even their lives. Naples continues to be one of the major Italian cities affected by Mafia presence.
